Believe it or not, my puppy is a big boy. We all made it through in one piece. Oscar is 10 months old now and weighing in at a whopping nine and a half pounds. He’s yuge. He’s also adorable, sweet, cuddly, tough and curious. Pretty much the best dog in the whole world.
Raising an 8-week old puppy is no walk in the park. There were many hours spent crying, missing my life without responsibility, wishing my fingers weren’t chew-toys and disliking the fact I had to take him outside every hour to potty. But in hindsight, it was worth every struggle. I couldn’t love Oscar more if I tried. He is so smart and loving. Watching him grow and learn has brought such joy to my life.
If I can give any advice for new puppy parents it would be to go to training classes as soon as you can. You can find some really affordable options that last for 5 or 6 weeks and have different levels based on age. I am so glad we did this with Oscar. Not only was it a great bonding experience, but you’d be surprised how much puppies learn that early. We spent time introducing him to sounds and textures that might scare a little puppy. It’s also great for socialization with other dogs. Mitch and I learned some great techniques to continue training at home which has been a lot of fun. Plus we had this pooch potty trained by 13 weeks!
I’d like to end this post by saying dogs are great and you need one. Go check out your local shelter and bring yourself home a pooch! Also, if you’re considering having kids…… try the puppy first. Great training……
